Bartending License in Canada – Provincial Certification

Two certificates matter. Your bartending school certificate proves drink recipes, bar setup, and server skills. Your provincial liquor license — Smart Serve, ProServe, Serving It Right, or the program in your province — is the government exam bars check before they hire you to serve alcohol.

Provincial Bartending License Requirements in Canada

Canada does not issue one national bartending license. Each province sets its own alcohol service rules, legal drinking age, and certification name. After our bartending course, you sit the exam for your home province.

Ontario – Smart Serve

• Certificate: Smart Serve — regulated by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO)
• Mandatory: Anyone serving, handling, or selling alcohol must hold Smart Serve certification
• Legal serve age: 19 at licensed establishments
• Course fee: $44.95 CAD — valid 5 years, training ~4 hours

Alberta – ProServe

• Certificate: ProServe — mandatory under AGLC policy
• Mandatory: All staff serving or selling alcohol in licensed premises
• Legal drinking age: 18
• Validity: 5 years, then retest
• Exam fee: from $35 CAD paid direct to government portal
• Register: aglc.ca/training

British Columbia – Serving It Right

• Certificate: Serving It Right — required for alcohol sale and service staff
• Legal serve age: 19
• Covers: Responsible beverage service at bars and restaurants
• Format: Courses may be taken online; final exam proctored online
• Register: responsibleservicebc.gov.bc.ca
• Our course: Vancouver bartending course — Serving It Right prep included

Manitoba – Serve It Safe

• Certificate: Serve It Safe — provincial certification for servers and bartenders
• Mandatory: Required for staff who sell or serve alcoholic drinks
• Covers: Responsible liquor service and provincial alcohol regulation
• Our course: Winnipeg bartending course — Serve It Safe guidance included

Saskatchewan – Serve It Right

• Certificate: Serve It Right — same program name as BC, Saskatchewan-specific portal
• Mandatory: Required for licensed hospitality workers who serve alcohol
• Covers: Responsible alcohol service under provincial liquor regulation

Quebec – Permis d'alcool

• Certificate: Permis d'alcool — required for bar and restaurant alcohol service staff
• Legal drinking age: 18
• Mandatory: Bar servers and bartenders must hold provincial certification

Nova Scotia – Serve Right

• Certificate: Serve Right — managed by Access Nova Scotia

Bartending School Training Before Your License Exam
